Choosing high-temperature tape starts with the process, not the headline temperature on a datasheet. The right construction must survive the actual dwell time, surface, pressure, electrical requirement, and removal method used in production.
Quick answer: use polyimide for demanding heat and electrical insulation, PET for clean dimensional masking, and glass cloth when tear and abrasion resistance are the priority.
Define the real operating temperature
Record the continuous temperature, peak temperature, heating rate, dwell time, and cooling cycle. A tape that survives a short peak may still fail during a long bake. Include the temperature of the adhesive interface, which can differ from the air temperature.
Compare common backing materials
Polyimide tape is a strong choice for demanding electrical insulation, soldering, battery assembly, and masking. PET tape offers a smooth surface, dimensional stability, and clean handling for many masking and insulation jobs. Glass cloth tape provides high tear resistance and mechanical protection where abrasion or wrapping tension is important.
Match the adhesive to the process
Silicone adhesive systems are commonly selected for high-temperature masking and clean removal. Acrylic systems can provide strong long-term bonding and weather resistance. Confirm adhesion on the exact substrate, especially powder-coated, low-energy, textured, or contaminated surfaces.
Check insulation and chemical exposure
For electrical work, specify dielectric performance, insulation class, thickness, and edge coverage. For plating, painting, or powder coating, check exposure to solvents, chemicals, pressure, and sharp edges. A thicker tape is not automatically a better insulator if it cannot conform to the part.
Validate before production
