Battery insulation tape protects tabs, cell edges, terminals, and module interfaces from short circuits and mechanical damage. It must also run cleanly through the manufacturing process and remain stable after exposure to heat and electrolyte-related conditions.
Map the application first
Separate cell termination, tab wrapping, edge bonding, module binding, and temporary process masking. Each location has different requirements for dielectric strength, adhesion, flexibility, thickness, and removal.
Check insulation and chemical exposure
Specify the required insulation level and clearance around positive and negative conductors. Test the tape against the actual electrolyte, separator, coating, and housing materials. A general high-temperature claim is not a substitute for a battery-specific compatibility test.
Compare PET and polyimide
PET tape is useful for clean cell wrapping, tab fixation, and general insulation where the process temperature is moderate. Polyimide tape is often selected for welding, baking, and other higher-temperature steps. Color, thickness, and liner choice can improve inspection and automated handling.
Design for production
Confirm unwind force, roll core, splice policy, die-cut registration, part separation, and packaging cleanliness. Samples should be tested on the same equipment and at the same line speed used for production.
Build a qualification checklist
